With a vision to create an elevated Mexican dining experience, the owner aimed to establish the largest bar in the Gainesville area, offering an extensive selection of tequilas and mezcals to attract guests from as far as Atlanta. The challenge was to transform two adjacent two-story retail spaces in the heart of the historic Gainesville town square into a restaurant featuring a grand staircase, an outdoor bar and patio, an upstairs bar and balcony, a large party room, visibility into the kitchen, and a focus on accessibility. The design includes front-door elevator access and a massive central bar with both standard seated and bar height options to accommodate all guests' preferences and abilities. The PRAXIS3 design team worked closely with the owner, utilizing market research and local surveys to refine the concept and develop a name and logo for the restaurant. The chosen name, translating to "smoke and fire," captures the essence of smoky and spicy Mexican cuisine and cocktails. This theme is reflected in the design through charred wood accents, striking light fixtures, and finishes inspired by traditional Mexican aesthetics, such as decorative breeze blocks, natural colors and textures, and bold, patterned textiles.
