Decatur Recreation Center

Architecture

The Decatur Recreation Center was originally constructed in 1958 and houses a diverse venue of recreational, civic and arts programs for the City of Decatur. Working closely with City officials, Rec Center staff and the local community through interactive design charrettes, PRAXIS3 (in a joint venture with artist/ architect Amy Landesberg) initially re-programmed the facility and then developed plans to renovate the building to accommodate the functional requirements of a 21st-century recreation and community center. The beloved, vintage, midcentury building has been restored and updated. The lawn of the structure is being utilized as a new and more active city park space. The building’s renovation was designed to achieve a LEED Silver Certification standard.
